Become a Foster Home

At times, the Medicine Hat SPCA receives animals into care that would be better suited to be set up in a temporary foster home. This includes: Momma dogs and cats with litters, pregnant momma's, orphaned puppies or kittens, animals with special medical needs and animals with special behavioral needs.

What the MHSPCA Supplies:

We supply all food and veterinary care for each animal in our care. We supply donated blankets, crates, food, dishes, toys, leashes, collars, harnesses, shampoo, etc. Supplies are available for pick up between 12-6pm at our shelter.

What Foster Parents Supply:

Foster families provide an intermediary home until a puppy/kitten is of the age and health to be adopted. This requires a foster family to be patient and provide training while the animal is learning to get along with new people, animals, homes, rules, etc. Foster families must be available to transport animals to the shelter or to vet appointments etc.

Other Ways to Help

The MHSPCA Adopt-A-Pet Facility has long played a vital role in the Community of Medicine Hat. There are many ways for groups and individuals to help us serve animals.

Project Ideas

Hold a Fundraiser to benefit the MHSPCA. Financial donations allow us to use your donation where it is most needed, whether it is to provide emergency medical treatment to an injured animal, buy supplies or take in homeless animals. Some groups have held book and bake sales, car washes, dog shows and BBQs for our benefit; the possibilities are endless. Be creative and see what your group can do!

Organize a Supply Drive to collect the things we need most. Our shelter is always in need of certain supplies. Visit our website for a current “wish list” (under “Support” and “Donate”) of items we need most. You can focus your collections drive on specific items we need (such as towels and blankets) or ask members of your community to donate any item on the list.

Make Blankets to keep cats cozy. Cut out a piece of double-sided fleece that is 24-36 inches square (exact size is not important). For a thicker blanket, stack two squares of fleece and sew the edges together.

Make Toys to entertain cats. Decorate empty plastic eggs or ping pong balls with permanent markers. These simple rolling toys are popular entertainment for shelter cats!

Make Chew Toys for rabbits and guinea pigs. Stuff empty toilet paper tubes with Timothy hay (available at pet stores). Our rabbits and guinea pigs will enjoy these tasty chewing treats!

Recycle Things in your Home to Help the Animals:

  • Bring us your old towels and blankets. We can put them to use for bedding, grooming and cleaning up around our shelter.
  • Collect shredded office paper, which is used for small animal cages. Please note we cannot use cross-cut shredded paper – only the kind with long, straight strips. We also cannot use shredded paper which may contain staples!
  • Save empty cardboard tubes from toilet paper and paper towels. They make good chew toys for rabbits and guinea pigs, and shelters for little critters like gerbils and hamsters.
  • Clean plastic shopping bags are used by our dog walkers for cleanup outdoors.

Donated items can be brought to the customer service counter at the Adopt-A-Pet Facility during regular business hours. No appointment is necessary.

For more information about special projects, or to schedule a tour, please contact the MHSPCA at 403-526-7722.
